Nepal’s health care system
Beyond emergency treatment, many aspects of Nepal’s health care system are inadequate, even compared to other developing countries.
• The life expectancy in Nepal is 61 years, one of the lowest in the world
• Nepal’s infant mortality rate is an appalling 6.4%
• There is only one doctor for every 18 000 people
Nepal’s population of 28 million is growing at a rate of more than 2% annually, which strains the country’s already overburdened health care system.
A cause of these shocking statistics is the complete absence of a coordinated system for responding to medical emergencies. With significant changes to the medical infrastructure, including the availability of emergency treatment outside of hospitals, the health status in Nepal can be drastically improved.
However, the government of Nepal alone cannot solve Nepal’s health problems.
Organizations and individuals must work together to improve Nepal’s health care system.
