Disaster management
The Ambulance Center will have a crucial role in Disaster Management.
Despite the fact that Kathmandu is overdue for a major earthquake, the city lacks an adequate valley-wide disaster management plan. There is no system for communication or coordination between ambulances, police officers, and fire services.
Beyond treating individual patients, the Ambulance Center will play an important role in responding to large-scale emergencies, including earthquakes and bus accidents. Students of the Center’s emergency medical course will be trained to manage disasters and MCIs (mass casualty incidents). When a major emergency occurs, the Ambulance Center will help to coordinate a city-wide response.
During a disaster, dispatchers will use two-way radios to send ambulances where they are most needed. When it isn’t possible to go to a hospital, ambulances will be able to bring medical supplies to victims and set up temporary medical posts. In case roads are impassable, EMTs will be dispatched on foot to find and treat patients.
